A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Rest Of My Life
Today I want to paint you a picture made of words. A beautiful little girl is born, eyes bright and full of nothing but potential. She spends her days looking at the clouds and dreams of all the things she wants to do in her lifetime. As she grows she receives scrapes and bruises and a few heart aches along the way. Life seems to become heavy – heavy with the “stuff” she doesn’t know how to shake off. Multiple events happen that she just can’t quite comprehend and she begins to make numerous wrong choices. But, when she slows down, when she looks to the clouds, she still sees her dreams…. Unfortunately, the path she now climbs is rocky and hard. There are now storms of her own making that leave her drenched in her own tears. She no longer dreams. Instead, she lives a nightmare, a nightmare in which she sees no way out. In her tormented state she is constantly bombarded by demons of addiction; guilt and shame. No matter how hard she tries she cannot free herself from herself or the nightmare she has created… She is sure she is trapped with absolutely no way out. Enter God…. Enter Teen Challenge!
No one starts out to be addicted. No one starts out to live a nightmarish life of being out of control, and it certainly does not happen overnight. I cannot count the hopeless, broken little girls living in full grown women’s bodies that I have seen during my ministry with Teen Challenge. By the time they come to us at Teen Challenge, these precious ones often don’t dare to hope. They are afraid to blink their eyes because they just know their nightmare will reappear. And then a “funny thing” happens… As they give control over to the one who knows them better than themselves; as they let go of the labels they wore in disgrace and begin to see who they are in Christ; as they begin to believe His truth; they begin once again to dream. They see that God really does want to give them a hope and a future. They see that He really does have a plan for their lives. Amazing! Amazing Grace! Amazing Love! And what is the result? Freedom! Freedom to become whoever God wants them to be. Freedom to dream, to hope. Freedom to live the rest of their life fulfilling God’s plan. Yes, a funny thing happened on the way to the rest of my life – a funny thing called the grace of God. #daringtodreamGod’sdream
