IT IS MY WAY… OR THE HIGHWAY
Have you ever known absolutely for sure that your way was the right way? You knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that your way was right – no matter what anyone else said? Boy, I sure have! I can remember times when my husband would say we need to do something a certain way, and I would say, ever so sweetly, “Honey, you know this way would be better.” He would kindly acquiesce, only to have to go back and do it the way he was going to do it in the first place. Our major difference of opinions usually happen when we are trying to find a place we have never gone before. To tell you how stubborn my husband and I can be, we even argue with our GPS devices. It is during these times where we have opportunity to put to use certain fruit of the spirit, like patience; kindness; and self control… But… there was one day that I just went with the flow…
I had to make a trip that would normally take about two hours. Unfortunately, I didn’t get started until right in the middle of rush hour traffic. Though I knew the way to where I was going like the back of my hand, I decided I would let “Google GPS” direct my path. The trip started just the way I thought it would. What do you know, Google was right. Then it happened, Google told me to go left when I knew I should go right. Well, I had plenty of time. so I thought I would just go a long for the ride. Google had me turn this way and that… sometimes I just knew the way I should be going was the total opposite of where I was being led. At one point I thought I needed to abandon the route before me and go the the way I KNEW I should be going. For whatever reason, I didn’t. I kept going. When it was all said and done I was dumped out on the highway I needed to be on way faster than if I would have gone my way. I also missed all the rush hour traffic and got to see some nice scenery. Wow! Maybe there is a way actually better than mine! Go figure….
This made me think about how many times the Holy Spirit would nudge me… yet I would keep going my own way thinking I must not be hearing right. Or worse yet, knowing what the Word says about an issue, yet I would still handle the situation my own self-indulgent way! And usually, every time I “did it my way”, I ended up with negative consequences. Scripture is quite clear, There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. (Prov. 16:25) Anytime I choose to do things my way instead of God’s way, I bring death into my life. I bring problems into my life that God never intended me to have. The bible also says in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” And the way to take advantage of God’s plan? Simply obey… Simply do things God’s way…. Simply yield…. Simple huh? No so much! Sometimes we can be so sure that the way God wants us to deal with a situation has to be totally a wrong turn! For example: Forgive when someone has hurt you… You mean you want me to let go? Absolutely. The Lord knows that if we let go of hurts and grievances, we are the ones who are set free. When God tells us to wait, we can become so impatient. We need to realize God isn’t trying to spoil our fun. I firmly believe when God tells us to wait, He is setting the stage for us; working things out for us; and doing a work in us! I could keep going, but I think you get the idea.
My prayer for me is that when God tells me to go straight; I will go straight. When God tells me to turn right; I will turn right. When God tells me to turn left; I will turn left. Stop; I will stop. Go, I will go. Wait; I will wait. My way… my way has never turned out real well for me. God’s way? God’s way is a way of blessing; safety; and sure direction. God’s way ultimately leads to eternal life!
