“Let Me Tell You How I really Feel…”
At this stage of my tenure at Teen Challenge, I get to sorta be “grandma”. (As much as I hate to admit it.) I no longer have to do a lot of the discipline, or evaluations. When I am around staff and students, I get to be “Pastor”‘; “Counselor”; and sometimes, even a “Mom” figure. I love what I get to do! BUT… to the kids, I am, above anything else, the Lady who has candy in her office! The other day, one of our munchkins wandered into my office, looking soooooo sweet and innocent… “PJ….” “Yes” “PJ…. you, ok today?” “Yes” “That’s good…. What ya up to?” “Workin” “Really, PJ, OK, I just want some candy!” I somehow don’t think he really cared how I was doing. This little guy had one thing on his mind: “CANDY”! And guess what? He got honest, and he got what he wanted. Sweet ol’ Pastor Grandma that I am – I gladly doled out the candy to him. But, what would have happened if he never got honest with me? He probably would of himmed and hawwed around; maybe would have gotten a hug and “you best be gettin back to your mom” comment and that would have been about it. I want to be more like him! I want to be honest about what is going on with me! In order for others to help me; in order for me to get all out of my relationship with the Lord, I have to get honest! How about you?
At Teen Challenge, we encourage our students to get real – to get honest. We know that if they do not get honest about what is going on with them, they will not get what they need. AND… if they do not stay honest, no compromise, with God – the chances for them to go back to negative behavior are high. Well, what about us… what about me? We, too, need to be honest. If we want to grow; if we want to stay healthy on all levels; if we want to successfully finish the course God has laid out for us, we need to get HONEST! The first person we need to get honest with is ourselves! We have to get to the point that we no longer avoid the proverbial elephant in the living room and deal with stuff – whatever that “stuff” may be! In order for God to set us free from the things of the past; bad habits and the such; we need to first admit there is an issue. Once we do that, we will quickly see that there is nothing too terrible or too hard for God to handle! There is a scripture that teaches that the “truth” will set you free… Well, I don’t know about you, but I want freedom in every area of my life. So…. let the truth begin! May God give us the boldness of that little guy who came to my office. And just like that little guy who got what he came for, we, too, will get what we come for if we are honest with God! #lettruthreign #honestyisalwaysthebestpolicy
