ONE MORE NIGHT WITH THE FROGS
My adopted Dad was a big scrapping fellow. When you looked at him, you wouldn’t think he would scare easy… and you’d be right. He didn’t know a stranger; he wasn’t afraid to share the gospel in any situation; and he sure wasn’t afraid to take a stand for what he believed in. BUT…. he had an un-explainable fear of frogs. So, what would we buy him? Frogs! Stuffed frogs; frog statues; pictures of frogs; any kind of frog we could find. I laughed myself silly when I came to the house and saw that someone had left a large statue of a frog on the front steps. Though we found our gifts humorous, he didn’t. And I can guarantee that Kermit, pictured above, would NOT be his favorite Muppet character. In the above picture the Doc is telling Kermie that he was about to receive life changing news. What I am about to write will not change your life, but the scriptural truth behind it will.
In the book of Exodus we read about the horrific plagues released on Egypt. In Exodus 8 we see how a plague of frogs reeked havoc over that land. Picture this…. Frogs in your food; in your bed; on your table; hopping across your kids. There were big frogs, little frogs, slimy frogs – frogs that nightmares were made of! There were so many that Pharaoh finally had enough. He asked Moses to call off Kermie and his friends. Moses agreed and told Pharaoh to name the time he wanted them gone. Pharaoh didn’t say, “Now! Get rid of them Now!” He said, “Tomorrow.” Tomorrow! Was he nuts! Who in his right mind would want to spend another night with those smelly amphibians?
Who? How about you? How about me? You might be saying: “I’d get rid of those lousy critters right that minute!” I’d like to think I would as well. Unfortunately, my lifestyle has not shown that to be true. There have been times I have allowed destructive “frogs” to remain in my life. Who are the frogs?
- F = Fear God has not called me to live in fear; rather I am to live by faith.
- R = Rebellion Jesus said if I love Him I will obey Him – not rebel against His will.
- O = Obsessive behavior Through Christ I am free from habits and behaviors that have plagued me in my past.
- G = Guilt I am free from the guilt of the past. I am forgiven.
- S = Shame Thanks to Christ I can hold my head up. My righteous is in Christ.
Unfortunately, I have allowed the “frogs” to remain in my life even after the Lord told me to let them go. I held onto them even after I knew that, with the Lord’s help, I was “more than a conqueror” over these negative interlopers who invaded my thoughts and actions. Scripture teaches me that I have the victory over any thought or habit that would hinder me. It is my choice to walk in the freedom Christ bought for me by His blood… or not. It is so easy to say, “Tomorrow, tomorrow, I will deal with my anger, my un-forgiveness, my lust, or (?) besetting sin.” There is a song that says, “tomorrow, who promised you tomorrow, serve the Lord today…” Only I, only you can make that choice.
I am not making light of dealing with these hindrances, and there are times we need the help of other Christians, even Christian programs like Teen Challenge, to be rid of them once and for all. But, the first step to eradicate any so called “frogs” is saying, “forget tomorrow, I am going to begin to deal with these things today.” And as we make that decision, remember, we truly can do all things through Christ. #justdoit-TODAY!
