Oooooh…That Wascally Wabbit
This year Easter totally snuck up on me! I can’t believe it is this coming Sunday! Last night at church I asked the congregation what they thought about when Easter was mentioned. Some said “the resurrection”. One young woman said, “chocolate!” with a smile of anticipation on her face. And of course, the Easter Bunny came up. Well, what is it with that wascally wabbit? What is so important about the so called Easter Bunny; and does he really have anything to do with Easter? Let me answer the second part of the question first: The Easter Bunny has absolutely nothing to do with Easter! He came over with German immigrants and is the spring version of Santa Claus. There is definitely more to the story, but basically he gives “good” kids gifts and treats; and the “bad” kids get nothing. According to their tradition, the Easter Bunny is important because he is judge and jury on the character of their children.
Judge, huh? So Mr. Hop-along is going to say who gets blessed and who doesn’t? I don’t think so! How far away from the truth of Easter can that be? Easter is when we celebrate the resurrection of Christ – where we acknowledge that due to Christ’s crucifixion and and resurrection, we can have right relationship with God. Easter announces to the world that dirty sinners – you know, sinners like you and me, can have Eternal Life through Christ! Mr. Bunny, if he rightly judged, wouldn’t give anyone a thing, for the bible is quite clear that we are all sinners in need of a Savior – there is no one good, not one! Personally, if he came to my spiritual house and was shown all my sin, he would either hop away, yelling: “Unclean, unclean” or fall over from a self-righteous heart attack!
Now, if I were in charge of Easter traditions and had to pick an animal to represent Easter, I would probably pick a dog. To me, dogs love you no matter what. And, no matter how tiny they are, they would protect you with their last ounce of strength. That to me better represents the Easter story. We serve a God who loves us beyond measure; sent His son to die for us when we were at our worst; has our best interests at heart; and is the supplier of everyone of our needs! At Teen Challenge, one of the hardest truths I have to get across to my students is that they are loved and forgiven. Though my students know through Scripture that they are loved by God and that they are forgiven of their sins, it is hard for them to accept that fact on a deep level. How could God love me, they ask? How could God forgive all I’ve have done? How? Simply because He can; simply because He does! We can never earn his love – we have it! We can never be good enough – our righteousness is as filthy rags; God looks through the righteousness of our risen Savior!
So, when you see the Easter Bunny hopping along, judging who is “good enough” to receive his gift, know that the Great Judge of the universe has found you worthy of His greatest gift through Jesus Christ His Son- the gift of an eternal relationship with Him! Happy Easter! Let’s have fun; let’s have an awesome time with family and friends; but let us keep close to us the real message of Easter. Remember, no matter what that Mr Hare-Brain may say about you, or anyone else for that matter; in God’s eyes, you are some-bunny special! #weservearisensavior
