The Power of Hope
We can lose a lot of things, but if we lose hope, we have pretty much lost everything. Hope in Christ is the only lifesaver that will keep our personal boats afloat. Throughout the years I have seen many who feel they have no hope. I have seen those who have given up completely – even doing their funerals. Why do they give up? I think there are many reasons people lose hope and people’s pain should never be trivialized. While thinking about people losing hope, I started a mental list of why people lose hope: we lose hope because we have put their hope in the wrong things; our eyes are on the gargantuan problem we maybe facing – not on the problem solver; we have been listening the what I call “hope zappers”-people who will find the most negative side of any situation; or maybe we have been fighting a battle and are so tired, especially emotionally, that we just don’t feel they can continue on. My question is, when I find myself facing some of these situations, how do I keep hope alive? For me to find the answer, I had to take it back to Scripture:
- Number one, know what HOPE really is: according to scripture, taking the word back to the original language we find that hope means a “strong and confident expectation” – it is the certainty that if God has promised something, He will fulfill it! We need to face our situations with an expectation that God will provide. He is our Hope! He will never let us down. Romans 8:24-25 says: “For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.
- We need to realize that HOPE will change us. It changes us into seeing ourselves as “pilgrims’, realizing this is not our home – that we are just passing through. This changes what we value; giving us an eternal perspective – realizing it is only Christ’s purpose that matters. This, in turn, will change how we live our lives. It will change us into those who want to serve; want to lead others to Christ; wanting to be an example – being those who disciple others.
- Hope gives us joy and peace: Romans 15:13: Now may the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- In hope we find strength, courage and boldness. Ps. 31:24: Be strong, and let your heart take courage – all you who hope in the Lord.
I could keep going… Hope is so important. The devil will try to make us think the things he has to offer will bring us “hope”. But, what he is really offering are anchors that will drag us down – drowning us in a sea of despair. Christ is our lifesaver; offering us hope eternal.
