The Worms Crawl In, The Worms Crawl Out…And Other Things
Those “little things” we allow in our lives
Anyone who knows me, knows I HATE creepy crawly things – especially the ones that scurry or slither real fast. I just absolutely hate them. Big or small; fat or thin; long or short; I HATE them! They totally gross me out and I will not tolerate them in my presence. Which is completely weird to me. As a former Law Enforcement and Community Chaplain I have seen some of the most horrific, bloody scenes. It doesn’t bother me. But, put one of those creepy crawly things in front of me, get out of the way or I will run you over! Why? To say I have the complete answer would be erroneous, but I think I know some of the reasons… Number 1: They show up unexpected! I don’t have time to brace myself for their appearance. Number 2: They are straight up rude. They are quick to invade my personal space. They don’t mind slithering or crawling right over a person – often leaving a disgusting trail behind. Number 3: They can cause disease! Even if they are not poisonous, they CAN cause disease. (Just think about the bubonic plague that was spread by fleas on rats!) And just like these little annoying creatures can cause problems in our lives, so can the little “annoying issues (sin)” we allow. They too, can appear unexpected; they quickly move right in; and they make us spiritually sick – sick to the point of spiritual death.
Scripture says, “Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes” (Song of Solomon 2:15). Just like it is the “little foxes” that spoil the vine, it is those so called “little” things that can end up destroying us. Before we know it, we are eaten alive by the things of this world; the woulda coulda, shouldas; fear; the past; unforgiveness…. and the list goes on. So how do I deal with those “little foxes”. We need to deal with them the same way I deal with those creepy crawly things that I hate so much:
Identify them. The best way to ID any of these pests is by seeing what the Holy Scriptures say about them and by asking the Holy Spirit to shine His light upon them.
Get rid of them – using the “eternal” exterminator: God – calling on the name of the Lord is poison to them.
Make sure I am not creating an environment that nurtures the little beasties-be cautious as to what I allow in my HOUSE/my TEMPLE.
Find other infestation “haters” (these guys are “sin”sitive) and enlist their support to help you see any vermin you have become blind to.
I need to keep in mind that the only way I can effectively get rid of these critters, is by applying my spiritual tools. Though I have tried to give some of them in a semi-humorous manner, this is very serious business. We can never handle our problems in our own strength – only through the power of the Lord. When I am in need of scriptures, I go back to a few of my favorites:
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Ecclesiastes 7:9 Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.
Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Phil. 4:13 I can do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength.
Romans 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want anything, anybody, or any circumstance to enter my life that is not pleasing to God. May we use the tools He has given us to fight off any “creepy critters” Satan may try and bring our way. Got to go…. Critter Alert!
