My name is Delia. I have been married for 18 years, to my wonderful husband Richard. We have two beautiful daughters. Leila is 25 and Lita is 16. I have lived in Sacramento for 27 years. I am a hairstylist at a salon in Carmichael and I volunteer cutting hair every other Monday at the Teen Challenge Men’s Crisis Center.
A few years ago when I worked for SAFE Credit Union, a member of Teen Challenge came in and gave us a brief overview of the program. I was definitely intrigued by the program and the impact it has had on so many lives. I have always wanted to somehow give back to the community. I always pray for guidance, so one night I went to the Teen Challenge website and I sent a brief email. The next morning I received a call from Jesse at the Men’s Crisis Center. Jesse said they had just been praying for volunteers. “Wow!”, I thought.
I was interviewed by Joanna. She provided in depth details about the program. I told her I was interested in cutting hair. I reviewed the Hairstylist/Barber volunteer description. One part of the paragraph read, “There is nothing like a new haircut that helps a student feel good about themselves while at the same time showing outwardly the new changes inside them.” I did not realize until I read this message what an impact my services would bring to these students. That’s when I knew I had made the right choice to become a volunteer at Teen Challenge.
Every student has an impact on me. Just thanking me and letting me know how much they appreciate a haircut and that I’m in their prayers makes it all worthwhile. The students and I have discussed the everyday challenges that life puts in front of us and we grow from these experiences. I hope to continue volunteering for many years to come!
